ASCB is an inclusive, international community of biologists studying the cell, the fundamental unit of life. Our faculty members are world-class researchers and teachers who share an excitement for the life sciences. The course now incorporates an optional fourth year, meaning students can either leave after three years with a BA or choose to stay on and complete an extended project under the supervision of an academic member of staff (which can be lab or field-based), in addition to advanced research skills training.
Our state-of-the-art Biology laboratories allow instructors to guide students in advanced research methods. The Lewis Lab studies persister cells responsible for tolerance to antibiotics, uncultured bacteria of the environment and the microbiome, and works on drug discovery. Each of these cells can carry out processes, e.g. anabolic and catabolic reactions, in order to sustain life. THey also use mtDNA mutations to trace mtDNA lineages and to study human evolution.
Students in the Biology program develop these skills with excellence. For instance, a living thing would be one that is comprised of a cell or a group of cells. You’ll learn how cells do what they need to do, from a molecular level right through to whole cells, tissues, and organs. It is impossible to study zoology without knowing a great deal about evolution, physiology and ecology. Vladimir Torchilin , who is a University Distinguished Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, has produced pioneering methods that aim to diminish the side effects of chemotherapy by delivering drugs directly into diseased cells and leaving healthy ones unharmed.
Biology examines the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution of living things. The biological and social sciences frequently aim to provide rational explanations for the phenomena they study. In your lab experience, you’ll develop knowledge of the nutrition and growth of bacteria, fungi and viruses that can be used to culture and control microorganisms. On this module you’ll attend lectures and seminars, and take part in fieldwork study and guided independent study.
The biological study can be traced back to early times. The Crane Lab investigates why cells deteriorate with aging and other diseases with a focus on cell metabolism. Our faculty will help you discover how the history of evolution led to the present moment, how humans are an integral part of this framework, and what climate change might mean for the future of life on our planet. Biology graduates may also enjoy working in the scientific support services in the capacity of a forensic scientist for the police or industry, or in policy development and consultancy, which involves providing advice to governments and other bodies.
Fundamentals of cellular biology, genetics and molecular biology are addressed. The Human Genome Project was the first step in a globalized effort to incorporate accumulated knowledge of biology into a functional, molecular definition of the human body and the bodies of other organisms. The similarities and differences between cell types are particularly relevant to molecular biology. The Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology prepares students for graduate and professional schools as well as a variety of careers within the life sciences.
Undergraduate students majoring in Biology have the opportunity to specialize in areas of particular interest by selecting from four different concentrations: Biology of Global Health, Cell & Molecular Biology, Integrative Biology, and Science Education. We provide undergraduate and graduate students access to the full breadth of the exciting and dynamic fields within the biological sciences. Examples of legal careers for biology graduates include roles in patenting, where understanding of specific scientific and technical features would help.
